Core Duties of a Police Trainee

  • Enforce the law and uphold the Constitution
  • Prevent and investigate criminal activities
  • Maintain peace and public order
  • Protect lives and property in communities across South Africa

Job Requirements

General Criteria

  • Must be a South African citizen aged 18 to under 30
  • No prior criminal record
  • Able to communicate in English and at least one other official language
  • Meet health and fitness benchmarks, including psychological and integrity assessments
  • Willing to relocate and train anywhere in South Africa

Academic Requirements

Stream 1

  • Senior Certificate / National Senior Certificate / National Certificate (Vocational)

Stream 2

  • A three-year National Diploma or Degree (NQF Level 6 or higher) in:
    • Policing
    • Law
    • Criminology
    • Forensic Investigation
    • Law Enforcement

Benefits and Compensation

During the SAPS Training Program Vacancies

  • Monthly stipend: R4,500
  • Full provision of meals, accommodation, and training gear

After Training

  • Annual salary: R186,483

About the Program

Selected applicants will be enrolled in the training program, a 21-month process divided into three distinct phases:

  1. Induction Phase – One month at a local police station
  2. Basic Training Phase – Eight months at a SAPS Academy (with practical exposure)
  3. Probation Phase – Twelve months of on-the-job service under mentorship

All training is fully funded by SAPS, including housing and meals, and is designed to prepare candidates for full operational deployment.
