Job Overview

The National Institute for Occupational Health (NIOH) invites applications for the position of Occupational Hygienist. This role is ideal for a qualified and experienced professional who is passionate about occupational health and safety. The successful candidate will support health risk reduction interventions within workplaces and affected communities, ensuring compliance with national standards and best practices.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct occupational and environmental health risk assessments, audits, and surveys for internal and external clients.
  • Advise on appropriate risk control measures to address identified hazards.
  • Develop and deliver training programmes (including post-graduate level) in occupational hygiene.
  • Support and participate in occupational health research projects to contribute to scientific knowledge.
  • Mentor, train, and supervise junior technologists and assistants in the Occupational Hygiene section.
  • Maintain and improve systems for NIOH’s Approved Inspection Authority to meet SANAS 17020 standards.
  • Present research findings at professional conferences and in technical publications.
  • Serve on national and international occupational hygiene committees.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health, Physiology, Occupational Hygiene, Engineering, Health Science or related field.
  • Master’s degree is an advantage.
  • Registered as an Occupational Hygienist with SAIOH or a similar recognised professional body.
  • 4 to 6 years of relevant experience in risk and exposure assessment.
  • Valid South African driver’s licence.
  • Strong knowledge of occupational hygiene legislation and practices.
  • Report writing and computer literacy (MS Office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Quality assurance understanding.
  • Ability to lead and mentor junior staff.
  • Excellent time management and ability to work under pressure.
