Job Overview

The City of Johannesburg is seeking a highly skilled Director: Disaster Management to join the Public Safety Department – Emergency Management Services. The ideal candidate will develop, implement, and oversee a comprehensive Disaster (Risk) Management strategy, ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulations.

Minimum Requirements

  • Education: Grade 12/Matric plus a Bachelor’s Degree/Advanced Diploma in Disaster (Risk) Management (NQF level 7)
  • Certification: Registered Disaster Management Practitioner with Disaster Management in Southern Africa (DMISA)
  • Experience: Minimum 10 years in disaster management, with at least 5 years in Senior Management

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement disaster management policies and frameworks in line with national legislation.
  • Oversee the establishment and operation of a functional Disaster Management Centre for the City of Johannesburg.
  • Ensure the integration of disaster management plans across all stakeholders.
  • Lead efforts to mitigate risks related to infrastructure, public health, and environmental disasters.
  • Manage a Disaster Management Information System to enhance communication and coordination.
  • Promote risk awareness through training and public education initiatives.
  • Oversee performance management and stakeholder collaboration.
